Packing – Arizona for 1 week

12/28/2019

A week’s worth of clothing and items for one week of (mostly driving) travel to Arizona! I wanted to make sure that if my clothes got snow and wet, I would have enough dry clothes so it’s more than I would normally pack.

Here’s what went inside:

  • Packing cube (clean/dirty) with:
  1. 5 long sleeve shirts
  2. 2 base layer underpants
  3. Pair of fleece pants
  4. 2 pairs of hiking pants
  5. 5 pair of underwear
  6. 4 pairs of socks (3 smart wool and 1 thick)
  7. 1 t-shirt and leggings for sleeping
  • Toiletry bag
  • Travel towel
  • Hand and feet warmers
  • Sunglasses
  • Knife
  • Medical kit
  • Sunscreen
  • Rain cover for backpack
  • Waterproof matches
  • Lantern
  • Tripod for cell phone
  • portable speaker
  • Lighter
  • Pocket Travel blanket
  • Medication
  • Toilet paper
  • Wallet
  • Passport stamp book!

I wore a shirt and one of the pants, and my shoes for driving. I also took a hoodie sweater, my Arc’teryx jacket and a merino wool buff that has worked wonders for a cold neck on a windy day. Throw in a new pair of co-op fleece gloves and I’m winter ready!

The portable speaker was because the car I rented didn’t have Bluetooth and there was no way I was driving over 1000 miles without listening to something! (I had intended to take my car, but someone decided to rear end me a day before I was to leave, but that’s another story)…

I did bring my nalgene water bottle and my waterproof hiking boots. These are in kid’s size because the women’s size was too big for my tiny feet. ☹️. They did great in the snow!

Everything fit in my Osprey 29L Celeste backpack (complete with a new patch I sewed on myself, I’m so proud).

I was especially grateful for finding a Smartwool merino 250 shirt on sale at REI because it’s the warmest thing I’ve ever owned (in Texas), and it did great out in the cold (it got down to 14 degrees out there).

My other good purchase was a 2 pack of co-op Norseland crew socks because my feet tend to freeze very easily.

I also brought my Osprey daypack for our day at the Grand Canyon.
